How to Choose the Perfect Entry Door for Your Home…

When it comes to making a good first impression, the front door of your home plays a crucial role. Your entry door not only serves as a point of entry but also sets the tone for the overall aesthetic of your home. But choosing the right entry door goes beyond just aesthetics. It needs to be durable, secure, and able to withstand the elements. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the different types of materials available for entry doors and help you make an informed decision on which one is best suited for your home.

Wood Doors: Timeless Beauty with Some Maintenance

Wood doors have been a popular choice for homeowners for decades. They exude a timeless beauty that can enhance the curb appeal of any home. Wood doors offer versatility in terms of paint and stain options, allowing you to customize the look to match your personal style. However, there are a few drawbacks to consider when choosing a wood door.

One of the main concerns with wood doors is their susceptibility to the elements. Wood is a naturally porous material, which means it expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. This can lead to warping, cupping, and twisting of the door over time. Additionally, wood doors are prone to rot when exposed to moisture. To maintain the beauty and functionality of a wood door, regular maintenance is required. This includes sanding, staining, or repainting every few years, especially in areas with a wet and humid climate.

Despite the maintenance requirements, wood doors remain a popular choice for homeowners who appreciate their classic charm and ability to be resized if needed. If you decide to go with a wood door, make sure to choose a high-quality option with proper weatherstripping to minimize the impact of the elements.

Steel Doors: Durability and Security

If you’re looking for a door that offers superior durability and security, steel doors are an excellent option. Steel doors are made with an inner frame of wood or steel and a 24-gauge steel skin, which can be thicker on premium doors. Most steel doors are filled with high-density foam insulation to provide energy efficiency and structural integrity.

One of the biggest advantages of steel doors is their resistance to the elements. Unlike wood, steel doors do not expand or contract with temperature and humidity changes, ensuring smooth operation year-round. They are also highly resistant to rot and can withstand direct sunlight without becoming uncomfortably hot to touch.

Steel doors are known for their security features, making them an ideal choice for homeowners concerned about intrusions. They offer strength and durability, making it difficult for would-be intruders to break in. It’s important to note that pairing a steel door with an aluminum storm door can cause the steel door’s finish to peel, so it’s best to avoid this combination.

While steel doors may not offer the same aesthetic appeal as wood, advancements in design have made them more visually appealing. Manufacturers like Masonite offer steel doors with deep, high-definition decorative panels that closely mimic the look of high-end wood doors. Additionally, steel doors are often more affordable than wood or fiberglass options, making them a cost-effective choice.

Fiberglass Doors: Low Maintenance and Energy Efficient

Fiberglass doors have gained popularity in recent years due to their durability, low maintenance requirements, and energy efficiency. Unlike wood and steel, fiberglass is not prone to rust or rot, making it an excellent choice for areas with harsh weather conditions. Fiberglass doors are made with molded skins of fiberglass on a framework of wooden stiles and rails and contain polyurethane-foam insulation.

One of the biggest advantages of fiberglass doors is their low maintenance nature. They resist dents, scratches, and warping, making them a hassle-free option for homeowners. Fiberglass doors also provide excellent insulation, helping to keep your home comfortable and energy-efficient. With a wide variety of styles and designs available, fiberglass doors can mimic the look and feel of solid wood doors without the maintenance requirements.

Masonite, a leading manufacturer, offers a range of fiberglass entry doors. Their Barrington collection combines the performance of fiberglass with the beauty of hardwood, while their Belleville collection offers superior architectural design. With a vast selection of decorative glass inserts, you can personalize your fiberglass door to match your style preferences.

Factors to Consider

When choosing an entry door, there are several factors to consider to ensure you make the right decision for your home. Here are some key considerations:

1. Weather Exposure

The amount of weather exposure your door will face is an essential factor to consider. If your door is exposed to direct sunlight or heavy rainfall, a steel or fiberglass door may be a better option due to their superior resistance to the elements.

2. Energy Efficiency

Consider the energy efficiency of the door material. Steel doors may not offer the same level of insulation as wood or fiberglass unless they have a thermal break incorporated into their construction. Look for doors with proper weatherstripping and insulation to minimize heat or cold transfer.

3. Aesthetic Appeal

The appearance of your entry door is an important consideration, as it sets the tone for your home’s overall aesthetic. Wood doors offer a timeless beauty, while steel and fiberglass doors can mimic the look of wood without the maintenance requirements. Choose a door that complements the style of your home.

4. Security

Security is a crucial factor to consider when choosing an entry door. Steel doors are known for their strength and durability, providing excellent security features. Look for doors with reinforced locks and hinges for added protection.

5. Maintenance Requirements

Consider the level of maintenance you are willing to commit to. Wood doors require regular sanding, staining, or repainting, especially in areas with a wet and humid climate. Steel and fiberglass doors require minimal maintenance, making them a convenient choice for busy homeowners.

6. Budget

Set a budget for your entry door replacement project. Wood doors tend to be more expensive, while steel and fiberglass doors offer more cost-effective options. Consider the long-term benefits and durability of each material when determining your budget.

Choosing the perfect entry door for your home is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Consider the durability, security, maintenance requirements, and aesthetic appeal of each material. Wood doors offer timeless beauty but require regular maintenance, while steel doors provide durability and security. Fiberglass doors are low maintenance and energy-efficient, mimicking the look of wood. Assess your specific needs and budget to make an informed decision that will enhance the curb appeal and functionality of your home.

Door Installation and Repair – Tips For Keeping Wood Entry Doors Looking Their Best…

Large front entry doors are an amazing staple to the curb appeal of your home. Unlike steel or fiberglass doors, natural wood entry doors require maintenance to keep that beautiful appeal. If you stay ahead of the natural degradation of the finish, the wood doors will last for a very long time.

Dealing With Minor Damage and Oxidation

Although the overall before photos below may not look terrible, the doors did need some maintenance attention. The close up photos, shown later in this post, provide examples of the minor damage and oxidation. Oxidation will cause the outside of the door to look chalky and dirty. If these minor blemishes are not fixed, the actual wood of the door will become susceptible to moisture deterioration (rot). Once the rot starts, the scope of repair becomes more involved than what we would consider maintenance.

The Door Isn’t Dirty, It’s Varnish Is Breaking Down

The next few pictures are where a trained eye comes in handy. Most homeowners may look at the doors and think its simply dirty. What may appear to be dirt and water stains is actually the varnish of the doors breaking down. Once the outside coating is compromised, the actual wood structure of the door becomes exposed to the many elements of Cincinnati seasons.

Sanding Is a Must Before Applying New Varnish

A key step to restoring the finish of the large wood front doors is sanding. Sanding the doors by hand will provide a solid, straight, and somewhat coarse surface for the first coat of varnish to adhere to. As shown below, this step in the process is where, “it gets worse before it gets better.”

After sanding and the first coat of varnish is applied, another light sanding will take place to smooth out any dust or debris that may have stuck to the first coat of varnish. The second sanding is again vital, as it provides the proper surface for a strong bond between the varnish and the door face. From here, the final coat of varnish is applied. The result is always well worth the work. This door will now weather the elements for years to come.

Why Choose One Variety Of Exterior Door Over Another?…

When choosing a new exterior door, make sure it provides energy efficiency as well as gives your home a new updated look.

Here are some ways to get you started in the process:

Entry Door Options

· Wood– While popular for its beauty, it requires more maintenance and tends to be more expensive than other options.
· Steel– This is known to be the least expensive option, but it doesn’t last very long and is easily damaged.
· Fiberglass– Fiberglass is durable, energy efficient, and basically maintenance free. There many color options available and they look very similar to wood doors.

Sliding Glass Doors

These are a very nice option if you are limited on space, as they slide on tracks. The downside to this choice is that they only open partially and can sometimes create a lot of noise when opening and closing.

French Doors

If you are limited on space, this would likely not be a great option as they provide a sophisticated look but open widely to give maximum air flow.

Bifold Doors

Bifold doors are easy to install. They are versatile and secure and have multiple locking points.  However, the many frames that go along with this option, may also obstruct views.

Lift And Slide Doors

These may look like sliding doors; however, they operate much differently. When opening, you turn the handle down, then lift the door panel upward from the track. The door will then easily open with little effort as it rolls on heavy duty wheels. These doors are customizable, so you can design any size opening you need.

What You Should Know Before Replacing An Exterior Door…

How great would it be if you could just pop out your old front door and replace it with a new one? In one bold move, you could change the look of your house and make your home safer and more secure — at the same time. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy; replacing an exterior door requires exact measuring, medium-to-advanced carpentry skills, and an understanding of terms and materials. Whether you want a simple hardwood entry door or a front door with a transom above and sidelight on the side, you can find it.

Material Choices

There are many options when it comes to front door replacement. You can choose double doors, doors flanked on both sides with sidelights or wooden doors with customized glass design. It is up to you and your personal taste.

To determine what type of material your door should be made of, consider your budget and the level of maintenance you are willing to do.

  • Wood-Wood doors, while beautiful, are more expensive and require maintenance, especially with high exposure to the elements. Wooden doors are strong, secure, and scratches are repaired with ease.
  • Steel– Steel doors are a great entry-level option they’re durable, budget-friendly, and offer a wide range of design choices, including colors and glass options. Steel doors are also a good choice because they resist shrinking, swelling, and warping, require little maintenance and are energy-efficient.
  • Fiberglass– Fiberglass, is a material that requires almost no maintenance because it does not dent, rot, or rust. Fiberglass doors are energy-efficient, affordable, and made to last in all climates and you can paint them any color or stain them to get a wood-like effect.

Factors That Impact The Cost Of An Exterior Door

Many factors go into the cost of the front door, whether you are choosing a decorative front door or a utilitarian one.

  • The door material- The material of the door is typically the most significant deciding factor of the overall cost of the door. You have many options for the material of your front door.
  • Alterations- A door jamb is part of the door frame: it’s the flat surface that runs vertically up either side. If you need to replace a door frame or jamb because you are changing the size of the door, it will increase the amount of labor done and material needed.
  • Energy-Efficient- There are several benefits that come with installing energy-efficient doors. Most people love how new doors update the look of their home, increase their curb appeal, and add to their home’s value. The benefits are much more than just cosmetic, though! Not all doors are created equal and there are a lot of doors that aren’t exactly energy efficient. The door’s material, core, and glass options all determine its energy efficiency.
  • Customization- Upgraded locks custom and hardware such as knows, hinges, and other upgrades will also alter the cost. Think of a custom door like a piece of jewelry for your home, and a gateway to your style. But as with anything personalized, it comes with a higher price tag.

Is The Installation Of A New Front Door A DIY Project?

While front door installation can be done by yourself, it is not recommended. The door jamb and frame often need to be altered to fit a new door and this needs to be done properly to protect the insulation properties. Keep in mind that a professional can make quick work of such a job, and in many cases, it might be the wisest choice to ensure it’s done properly.

Simply put, there’s a world of difference between what an interior bedroom door and your entryway door can do for your home. Thinking about your door’s purpose first, then its personality will help you make the right choice and stay on budget.
